How awesome would it be for a man to propose marriage in a somewhat ‘out-of-this-world’ way? How would you feel knowing that it took your man more than ten years in planning for this proposal? And, lastly, how would you feel if your man’s marriage proposal has just landed a world record and carved a spot in history?
Almost 11 years ago, an artist from Tokyo had started conceptualizing how he will ask for his girlfriend, Natsuki’s hand in marriage. For ten years, he has been working on careful calculations, traveling, and planning.
Finally, in 2018, he decided to incorporate GPS art into his marriage proposal.

The art of GPS involves creating large-scale digital drawings by traveling with a GPS device. According to Google, it requires a predetermined route that can take the shape of letters. The said route can be uploaded to Google Earth.
However, things were not comfortable at the start. Yasushi had to quit his job to travel from the island of Hokkaido to the shores of Kagoshima. For six months of traveling, he covered a total distance of 7,000 kilometers so he can spell out the proposal which also included a heart sign.
He was able to complete the phrase, “Marry Me” in about six months. Google was able to pick up the said image.
The Guinness Book of World Records took notice, too, as Yasushi’s GPS image landed the world record for the most massive GPS drawing in history.

There is a growing number of people who create GPS art using Google Earth and Google Street View. Its appeal comes from the unique blend of drawing and traveling. Runners and cyclists enjoy using it when changing routes. Other people enjoy creating images of different animals and even fictional characters.
One thing that is more interesting than this marriage proposal is, probably, Natsuki’s response.
