Would you wear an old wedding gown or do you prefer a new one? While that depends on a number of factors, of course, one bride decided to wear her grandma’s dress from 1955 – and it was also worn by her mother in the 1980s! The impressive photos of the three brides went viral, with netizens expressing how they actually love the concept.
Natalie Nicolson shares that she was able to wear her grandma’s dress without alterations; though she was not able to wear the big hoop underskirt as the material didn’t make it over the decades. But while her dress is not as full as that worn by her grandma and mother during their weddings, it still looked fabulous on this young bride!
According to Natalie, she knew that her mother wore her grandma’s 1955 wedding dress to her wedding in 1984, but she didn’t think it was the right dress for her at first. She thought about shopping for a more modern outfit for her 2018 wedding, yet she didn’t find any that felt perfect.
“I started looking for dresses almost right after we got engaged in every dress shop I could with my mom and sister. There were a few I came close to getting, but nothing felt perfect in terms of price or fit,” Natalie admitted.
Her mother later suggested that she try her grandma’s dress, but she initially refused because she thought of wearing a two-piece set or even a jumpsuit.
“I thought it would be important to wear something distinctly me,” she added.
But as Natalie found herself drawn to dresses with fuller skirts as the wedding date drew near, she finally decided to check out her grandma’s dress, a Bonwit Teller wedding gown. It was the perfect fit!
“I didn’t have to get anything altered — just a dry clean. It was more cream than the white it had been when my grandma wore it,” she revealed.
“I was scared it was too delicate. My family assured me it was OK if something happened to it. No one was counting on it lasting another generation.”
Just like the two brides before her, Natalie looks so gorgeous in the 1955 wedding gown! And while the delicate dress might not last until her own daughter’s wedding, we’d definitely love to see if that actually happens in the future!
What’s Bonwit Teller?
Bonwit Teller was a luxury department store in New York City founded by Paul Bonwit in 1895. Sadly, although it was popular for decades, the store eventually went bankrupt and finally closed in 1990.
